February 24, 2024Research shows that using popular media in the classroom can enhance students’ analytical skills and engagement investigating technical topics taught in class, and enable visualization of theoretical models through real-life applications. Game theory courses are not an exception and students taking them can benefit greatly from this pedagogical approach. We illustrate this active-learning technique by using the long-running reality TV show Survivor. We provide examples from the TV show that highlight the most important types of simultaneous-move games, as well as how instructors can embed them into their courses. Our proposed lesson plans aim to enhance students’ understanding of abstract concepts without detracting from academic rigor.
