Preparing your Manuscript for JET

JET endeavors to be the premier outlet of economic teaching techniques at all levels. Our community includes economics professors, instructors and high school teachers.

Target Audience

JET was created to connect educators looking for a community to share their ideas on ways to teach economics as a whole or specific economic concepts. We encourage educators at all levels to submit, read, and connect with others in the community. The Journal will be publishing ideas from the elementary level through graduate level economics.

What JET Offers

JET offers a new kind of journal for those educators interested in making their classroom more engaging and more innovative while not losing the rigor expected in an economics course. Along with journal articles, JET will provide supplemental materials like websites, computer programs, and lesson plans that help keep the lecture an environment conducive to learning economic materials.

What JET Publishes

JET publishes papers that present innovative ways to teach economic ideas.  Our readers want to hear what other educators are doing to make economics more accessible in the classroom.

Cabell’s and Indexing

JET is listed in Cabell’s Journalytics and is indexed by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) and Google Scholar. The journal is a member of Crossref and all articles are assigned a DOI number. The journal is assigned ISSN 2690-506X.

Policies

Publication Ethics Policy

JET is committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity in the publication process.

JET is a member of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and subscribes to its Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing.

JET reserves the right to use plagiarism detection software to screen submissions.

Content published in this journal is peer reviewed (Double Blind).

Editors and members of the JET Board may submit their work to JET for consideration in the journal. Board members and editors who author papers must refrain from any involvement in the review process. To ensure anonymity in the review process, any submission by a member of the editorial team will be handled by either a JET Board member or a past editor outside the normal submission portal. In any case, the author must recognize that the assigned editor’s decision is final. Furthermore, to maintain anonymity of authorship, we request that articles under review at JET should, to the extent practicable, not be available online (for the duration of the review process, please remove author identification from sites like SSRN, and remove from personal webpages). If the article is accepted for submission, a note will be included acknowledging that the author was in no way involved with the editorial process.

No Board member or editor will have more than one article published in any single volume (currently three issues).

Publication Malpractice Policy

Any article found to be under review at another journal will be immediately rejected without possibility for review. Similarly, if an article is found to be plagiarized it will be rejected. If it is discovered after publication that an article has been plagiarized, it will be removed from JET’s website, and the author will be notified.

Correction/Retraction Policy

If, after publication, an author requests a correction, the Editor will consider the request. If the request is granted, a note will be added to the article in order to appraise readers of the change. Such addendums may be applied as Corrections to the original material, Retractions of material, or in extreme cases, Removal of the original material. In the case of Removal, the Board of Directors of JET will be consulted.

Use of Generative AI Policy

The Journal of Economics Teaching supports the use of Generative AI in promoting economic education.  We believe that AI can help encourage new ways of teaching and learning economics.  In terms of publishing articles at JET, there are a number of ways AI can assist authors with their work including: enhancing idea generation, improving readability and clarity, and assisting non-English language authors.

We also realize that AI can create problems with attribution, hallucination, and intellectual property rights among other concerns.  To this end, the JET Editorial Board and the JET Executive Board are providing the following policy to inform authors, reviewers, and editors of our expectations related to this technology and the publication process.

Authors:

Authors are responsible for the integrity of any manuscript they submit to JET.  Additionally, we presume that an author’s submission is an original work.  Therefore, the use of AI is expected to be ethical and in alignment with the standards of JET.

Any use of AI for content creation should be acknowledged.  This includes the name of the tool used (including version number), how it was used, and the purpose of the AI generated material.

Authors should not use AI as a replacement for traditional, rigorous research as AI has the potential to provide inaccurate responses.  Authors should be particularly aware that AI often provides non-existent resources, inaccurate statements, and biased conclusions.  It is the responsibility of the author(s) to validate any information provided by AI.

In any case of AI use, AI tools must not be listed as an author.  Current AI tools are not accountable for the information they share when prompted.  This is the exclusive responsibility of the author(s).

Prior to publication, authors will be required to sign a statement indicating their use of AI.  This will include an acknowledgment any use of AI for content creation, and whether AI was used in the editing process.  Responses will be included in a footnote on the first page of the published paper.  Using AI for grammar check will not be a detriment in the review process.

Editors (including copy editors):

Due to the extensive concerns about intellectual property rights, reviewers and editors must not upload submissions, including manuscripts, images, appendices, figures, or tables, into AI for any reason.  Failure to accede to this policy may violate the property rights of the rightsholder.

The use of AI to format references is permissible.  Upload the references to AI separately from the body of the paper.

Reviewers:

Reviewers are expected to maintain integrity in the review process.  As such, while review of articles can be assisted by AI, reviewers are prohibited from uploading any material sourced from JET into an AI.  Any summaries or comments about a paper must not be assisted by AI as this would involve uploading material.

Please reach out to the Editor, Brian O’Roark, at oroark@rmu.edu with any questions.

The “Teaching Notes” section is designed for unique teaching ideas that are not suited to the typical journal format.  Papers for this section of the journal will present ideas that are supported by webpages, media content, Excel worksheets, or other innovative technologies.  The Journal of Economics Teaching is able to host content from such papers.

Have more questions about writing a Teaching Note?

-To see three different types of notes, please read A Note on Teaching Notes. The full list of teaching notes is here.
